Freedom, Truth, Courage and Ethics [The Guardian]
With regard to the article “Democracy and freedom of expression are under threat in Brazil” (The Guardian, Feb 7th, 2020), in which about 2000 Brazilians artists, academics and others express their point of view related to the transformations that are taking place in Brazil, starting from 2019, I have some remarks.
The Brazilian authors of the article related that “Brazilian institutions are under attack”. Well, the institutions are under attack to avoid the corruption (the biggest of humanity history, from 2003 to 2018); to avoid supporting heinous dictatorships, such as the governments of Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea and others; to stop the interaction between the Executive Branch and the Parliament based in changing of personal favours and others condemnable procedures.
They mentioned that in the Brazilian government there is a “persecution campaign, ominously called School Without Party”. A persecution campaign or an absolutely required campaign? Or is it fair for a teacher to make Tory campaign inside the classrooms of the United Kingdom as artists and academics of the loser party insist in doing inside Brazilian classrooms?
They reported that “later that year, as Brazil’s Amazon forest burned at an alarming rate, Bolsonaro’s administration retaliated against scientists who dared to present facts … ”. Why didn’t they report that the rate of Amazon forest burning in 2019 was quite similar or even smaller than the biggest burnings during Lula’s and Dilma’s administration, and the scientists didn’t clarify this? In the upshot, was the rate of Californian or Australian forest burning due to failure of the Trump administration or the Morrison administration, respectively (or even due to failure of the respectable Queen Elizabeth)?
They related that “the federal prosecutor’s office opened a baseless investigation into the American journalist Glenn Greenwald”. Why didn’t they relate that Mr. Greenwald fled the United States (maybe because of misconduct) and came to Brazil? Here, based in data obtained by gangsters, through criminal procedures, he accused Brazilian authorities of wrong actions. Why didn’t they relate that the wrong actions were investigation, judgement, indictment, condemnation and arrest of politicians and businessman who committed crimes of corruption — the biggest corruption crimes practiced in the world?
They mentioned that “In 2019 alone, there were 208 reported attacks on media and journalists in Brazil”. Why didn’t they mention that President Bolsonaro was elected on account of the lies that journalists, artists, and academics published against him in the press? Why didn’t they mention that after taking office, daily, there were attacks against his administration? Why didn’t they mention that the 208 mentioned attacks were answers to the lies published against his government?
They reported that the Brazilian Secretary for Culture “made apparent allusions to Nazi principles and lifted phrases from the Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels”. Why didn’t they report that the official was dismissed by the government in the following day after his declaration?
They related that the current government represents “a continuous affront to freedom of expression … to the public institutions that represent Brazil’s multicultural heritage”. Why didn’t they relate that Brazilians citizens elected the President because those institutions don’t represent most part of Brazilian’s will, interests and specially the search of their main goal (peace and harmony)?
They mentioned that “the Brazilian film-maker Petra Costa, director of the documentary The Edge of Democracy, currently has a chance of becoming the first female Latin American director to win an Oscar”. Why didn’t they mention that the film present apology, support and defence of the former President who committed crime against the Constitution and consolidated the biggest moral, social, economical and political crisis of Brazilian history? Why didn't they mention that the former president was impeached by the Parliament under the leadership of the Supreme Court President in rigorous accordance of the Constitution?
They reported that “The Bolsonaro government is also working to reverse several important social achievements of the last two decades, including affirmative action”. Why didn’t they report that the important social achievements of the last two decades caused the unemployment of more than 20 millions of Brazilians? Why didn’t they report that the important social achievements are responsible for the horrendous situation of Brazilian education (Brazilian students are among the worst students of the OCDE PISA evaluation)? Why didn't they report that the important social achievements meant giving loans for heinous dictatorships. Why didn't they report the financial resources of the loans weren't used to solve the terrible Brazilian health, education, security and housing problems?
They related that “Bolsonaro and his ministers routinely disparage ethnic minorities and the LGBT+ community – all while ignoring the violence and criminality of rightwing paramilitary militias”. Why didn’t they relate that one of the closest Bolsonaro’s friend is a black citizen, elected to the House of Representatives with the biggest amount of Rio de Janeiro State votes? Why didn’t they relate that Bolsonaro has friends and supporters in the gay community? Why didn’t they relate that Bolsonaro presented to Parliament a law project to benefit indigenous community as it never happened before in our country? Why didn’t they relate that the criminality has fallen down since the beginning of Bolsonaro government?
They mentioned that “This is a government that has no development plan for its people.” Why didn’t they mention that the economy is recovering; the corruption is falling down to residual levels; the government (the presidency, executive branch) is dealing with the Parliament in fair and constitutional basis; the support to heinous dictatorship stopped; the financial resources are not distributed to media organization with the goal of getting support; the criminality is falling down continuously; and the unemployment is decreasing? Why didn’t they mention that this government has no development plan for its people but the country is recovering of the worst moral, social, economical and political crisis? Why didn't they mention that — in spite of the artists and academics who are upset about their ideological and, as incredible as it seems, financial interests — Brazilians want, like and support this development plan of a sort?
They reported that Brazilians artists and academics “fear that these attacks on democratic institutions may soon become irreversible". Why didn't they report that, if the Bolsonaro government is successful, there will be losses for politicians, businessmen, artists and academics favourable to corruption, hideous dictatorships and the high level of unemployment? Why didn't they report that the transformation was asked and required by Brazilian citizens? Why didn’t they report that this transformation will become irreversible as the desire of most of Brazilians?
They related that "at the end of that year, when Brazil's Amazon rainforest burned at an alarming rate, Bolsonaro's government retaliated against scientists who dared to present facts ...". Why didn’t they inform that the burning rate of the Amazon rainforest in 2019 was quite similar or even lower than the highest burning rate during the Lula and Dilma government, and the scientists did not clarify this? By the way, was the rate of forest burning in California or Australia due to the failure of the Trump administration or the Morrison administration, respectively (or even due to the respectable Queen Elizabeth)?
At the end of the article, The Guardian editor informed that “more than 2,000 actors, academics, journalists, artists and others have signed this op-ed”. Why didn’t he report that more than 59 millions of Brazilian adult citizens (equivalent to the 63 millions of United Kingdom inhabitants) elected the government to perform these transformations?
The editor also reported that “we’re asking readers, … in support of the Guardians’s open, independent journalism. … The Guardian has been in every corner of the globe, reporting with tenacity, rigour and authority on the most critical events of our lifetimes.” Does the editor agree with Beria, Goebels and hideous, nefarious and rascal citizens around the world, whose speech emphasize that "the lie repeated over and over becomes true"? Does he think Locke, Newton, Darwin, Orwell, Churchill et al would agree with that?
And last but not least, most Brazilians "believe that each one of us deserves access to accurate reports with integrity at heart", as is highlighted at the end of the newspaper exhortation. But most Brazilians believe in something more relevant, which is outside the context of the article. They believe in the prevalence of Freedom, Truth, Courage and Ethics — basis of Democracy which is the instrument of searching for peace and harmony.
