The American journalist Nick Friedell published an article in The New York Times entitled “Steve Kerr on Oscar Schmidt in wake of Brazilian great’s death: ‘A beautiful player’ ”.
In this magnificent article, Friedell conveys the testimony of Steve Kerr, basketball coach of the Warriors. I highlight the following statements:
“Kerr mentioned a memory about Schmidt that has stuck with him for 40 years. It was when Kerr, as a member of Team USA, tore an ACL in the semifinals of the FIBA world championships in Madrid in 1986. Schmidt, the star of the Brazilian team playing against the Americans, helped pick Kerr up and carried him off the floor.
“He literally picked me up, carried me off the floor,” Kerr said. “It was an incredible gesture on his part, and over the next few years, he really exploded. Didn’t he have like 48 against Team USA a few years later?
“It was actually 46 points against the Americans in the gold-medal game of the 1987 Pan American Games. He then had 31 against Team USA a year later at the Seoul Games, the last time the U.S. sent a team of college players to the Olympics.

“I always admired him so much,” Kerr said. “I was so sad to hear about the news today. Only 68. The guy was absolutely beloved in Brazil, so to all our Brazilian fans, I want to say my condolences, and from the Warriors, we’re feeling for you.”

Thank you very much Mr. Friedell and Mr. Kerr for your testimonies. Mr. Schmidt was not only a great basketball player, he was a phenomenal human being. He contributed to making the world a better place for everyone. He will always be remembered for his unsurpassed virtues.

O jornalista americano Nick Friedell publicou no jornal The New York Times o artigo “Steve Kerr sobre Oscar Schmidt após a morte do craque brasileiro: 'Um jogador belíssimo' ”.
Nesse magnífico artigo, Friedell transmite o testemunho de Steve Kerr, técnico de basquetebol do time Golden State Warriors, de São Francisco, na Califórnia. Destaco a seguinte declaração:
“Kerr mencionou um evento de 40 anos atrás, quando ele, como integrante do time de basquete dos EUA, na semifinal do campeonato mundial de Madrid em 1986, caiu na quadra e rompeu o ligamento cruzado anterior. Então, Oscar a estrela do time brasileiro jogando contra os americanos, levantou Kerr e o carregou para a lateral da quadra. [...]
“Foi um gesto incrível de sua parte, e nos próximos anos, ele realmente explodiu. Ele fez 48 pontos contra a equipe americano alguns anos mais tarde.
“Ele fez 46 pontos e ganhou a medalha de ouro contra a equipe americana nos Jogos Panamericanos de 1987. E ele fez 31 pontos contra a equipe americana no ano seguinte nos Jogos Olímpicos de Seul, a última vez que os EUA enviaram um time de universitário para a Olimpíada.
“Eu sempre o admirei muito. Eu fiquei muito triste ao receber hoje a notícia de seu falecimento. Apenas 68 anos! Ele era absolutamente amado no Brasil, então, para todos os fãs brasileiros, eu quero expressar as condolências, minhas e dos Warriors. Nós estamos sentindo muito.”
Eu expressei um especial agradecimento ao jornalista e ao ex-adversário de Oscar no basquetebol.
Muitíssimo obrigado Sr. Friedell e Sr. Kerr por seus testemunhos. Oscar era não apenas um excelente jogador de basquete, ele era também um ser humano fenomenal. Ele aspirava e agia para construir um mundo melhor para todos. Ele será sempre lembrado por suas inigualáveis virtudes.
